Behavioural science

If you’re in business, then you need to understand people. To truly understand people, and how and why they behave in particular ways, you need behavioural science.

Why?

We place behavioural science at the forefront of everything we do. We use our expertise in understanding complex business issues and bring the disciplines of behavioural science and digital skills to help solve them through affecting people’s behaviour.

Behavioural science is transforming every industry around the world. Big names such as the European Commission, HMRC, UNICEF, Amazon and EY, to name a few, all have behavioural science teams.

But what is it and why should we all be paying attention to it?

Put very simply, it is the systematic study of behaviour and whilst a relatively new discipline it is revolutionising how people approach design because it is evidence based and science backed.

If you’re in the business of learning and development, then you are in the business of behaviour change.

It may sound obvious but focusing on behaviour change requires a ‘behaviour first’ approach to design as too often a business problem is not clear, the barrier to behaviour has not been identified and a solution been decided to a problem that’s not yet clearly understood.

The principles that inform traditional learning and development approaches were developed in the 1960’s and 70’s and based on people building their knowledge in classroom settings, rather than on whether they actually apply it in the real world.

That is exactly why we believe in and are investing in behavioural science expertise. We want to be confident that our designs create real behaviour change. We’ve never been able to do that before. But now we can say, with confidence, that the interventions we design do exactly that.

How?

Our team of experienced designers, writers and developers are supported by the knowledge and insights of our in-house Behavioural Science Consultants who are at the forefront of the latest thinking in behavioural science along with an extended team of partners in the field. The design techniques they use are constantly evolving as the discipline develops.

Following an extensive period of research, we have developed our own behavioural insights mantra. This is a practice we love to use to guide our design process; to create the most impactful learning experience, tailored to each audience. Led by Dr. Charlotte Hills and Dr. Elaine Gallagher, the team offer evidence-based strategies to measurably change behaviour.

At the end of the day, behavioural science is a movement that’s not going anywhere. We want you to come along with us on the journey.
